Surf's down, sun's up with new Case logo

The so-called fat surfer has been replaced by the sun.

Case Western Reserve University today unveiled its new logo, which includes a boxed-in sun that appears to be rising over the earth next to the university’s full name and the year it was established. The new logo somewhat resembles the school’s original logo, which featured a rising sun.

The original logo was replaced four years ago with one that some believe resembled a fat man carrying a surfboard and marketed the university as “Case.” That marketing move upset many alumni who felt the former Western Reserve University, which merged with the Case Institute of Technology in 1967 to form the university as it is today, was ignored. As a result, some alumni chose not to donate to Case.

The latest logo was designed and selected with the input of more than 10,000 faculty, staff, students, alumni and others in the community. It was approved by the Case board of trustees on June 2.

In a June 4 letter to the community, interim Case president Dr. Gregory Eastwood said the new logo will be implemented by July 1, when the university’s new permanent president, Barbara Snyder, arrives from Ohio State University, where she currently is provost. (…)
