Publication Standards Guid
Awhile back, UC Davis received a major statewide honor, the Golden Bear Award, at the California State Fair Gala. The award was engraved “University of Davis, California.” While for a brief moment I kind of liked the ring of it, it reminded me of a problem we have. UC Davis stands out among research universities for its diversity of academic programs and research endeavors. That diversity lends strength and distinction to the campus, but it can also cause confusion among the various publics we serve. It’s important, then, that we establish a single, unified identity. To that end, I encourage units campuswide to follow the guidelines found here. They provide the flexibility to achieve your unit’s goals while benefiting the entire university.
Introduction
UCDavis is characterized by many voices, many messages and a growing need to communicate clearly and persuasively. How do we accomplish that? How do we let our audiences know that we come from a cohesive institution? How do we share our sense of ourself and our distinctiveness? How do we ensure professional-quality publications consistently across campus? One path to that goal is offered here: a Publications Standards Guide. Produced by the UC Davis Editorial/Design Office, the guide is intended to help everyone who writes, edits or designs printed or electronic publications. It’s designed for those new to the field and needing advice on getting started and for experienced professionals who want their publications to share and reinforce the campus visual and editorial identity.
