Senior Caribous begin a new era

It’s more than a team logo; it’s the symbol of a new era of senior hockey in Clarenville.

That’s how some are describing the Don Cherry’s Clarenville Caribous new logo and slogan.

The logo was unveiled to a packed house of hockey fans and Caribous players at Don Cherry’s Thursday evening.

“We felt that with a new team and new attitude it was time to create a logo that would be more representative of the team we are,” says Caribous chair Keith Rodway.

The old Caribous logo has been around for a long time and is still being used by the minor hockey system in the community.

Rodway says the Senior Caribous organization wanted to separate itself from that a little and have a more professional feel.

It was then just a matter of finding the right logo. As a corporate sponsor of the team Todd Cole of Pure Marketing and Design was charged with coming up with the new design.

“We started tossing around some ideas and Keith came up with the idea of having a caribou chomping down on hockey stick,” explains Cole.

From there he contacted local teacher and graphic artist Riley Fitzgerald.

“He knew exactly where I was coming from and within an hour he had something sketched up.”

The caribou in the centre of the logo is Fitzgerald’s creation.

Cole then took that sketch and, through some computer magic, added the colours, the background triangle and the slogan.

“Traditionally the Caribou logo has been circular but to add a different edge we went with the triangle which is consistent with the lines of the new jersey,” explains Cole.

“That was step one. We initially had blue incorporated, as that has traditionally been a colour of the Caribous. But when we sized it up the blue was throwing it off. We were starting fresh so we just decided to go with the black, red and white colour scheme.”

The executive worked closely with Cole throughout the entire process and with some minor tweaking the final logo was created.

“We told them we wanted to create a more aggressive caribou. We wanted a logo that would be represented well in print and on clothing and we wanted a logo that people would be proud to wear,” explains Rodway.

One piece of the puzzle

Rodway says the new logo is just one piece of the new Caribous organization.

“The purpose of this logo is to create an awareness and an association to what we are and what we stand for. The logo itself will portray aggressiveness with a positive attitude. We are not out to be a fighting team; we are out to be a winning team. We are hoping this logo will portray that in the long run,” he says.

“It’s an evolution of hockey in this town. We have a very organized and talented organization in place, we have quality hockey players in place and we have tremendous support from our sponsors. This time we are walking into this having evolved from our history, learning from our mistakes and our successes. This time we are going to evolve that into something bigger and better.”

The team also launched its new website Thursday evening, www.clarenvillecaribous.com.

“That will be the centerpiece of getting information to our fans,” says Rodway.

“Through that, along with traditional media such as the Packet, we will get information out to our fans on what is happening with the Caribous.

“We are going to have an extensive line of merchandising. We have started simple with hats, t-shirts and sweaters. However, we will expand that … to other items such as jerseys.”
