Mount begins phasing in new look by unveiling fresh logo
by Bill Cauley

For decades, Mount St. Mary's University wore its previous athletic logo with pride. But through the years, students, instructors, coaches and administrators felt a more definable symbol was needed.

The revised logo was revealed on Tuesday at the Knott Arena. The school held a press conference to introduce the fresh symbol, and reporters were given a 19-page pamplet titled “Mount St. Mary's University: Logo Standard Guidlines,” which described the colors, fonts and marks of the new logo.

The primary logo features the words “The Mount” with a mountain in the background. Secondary logos, featuring the university's name, the nickname “Mountaineers” and sport-specific marks, were also created.

The primary color scheme of the new logo for the Mount is blue and white, much the same as the previous one. But gold has been added as an accent color.

Dr. Thomas Powell, president of Mount St. Mary's, said on Tuesday the change in the logo was needed because it was determined the school needed a new look.

There have been times when the Mountaineer nickname caused confusion among other NCAA Division I schools the Mount plays. One such school was West Virginia University, which has similar colors and also touts the Mountaineer as a mascot.

“The new logo embodies a mountain theme,” Powell said. “As the process evolved, it became clear that this was important to our students and alumni.”

New uniforms with the updated logo are being made for all of the school's intercollegiate sports teams. Mark Murphy, goalkeeper for the Mount men's soccer team, said he's excited about the new look.

“It's eye-catching,” Murphy said. “It's going to really stand out and will make us more identifiable.”
