Shades of the Torrey pine make up new Del Mar logo
The city has a new logo, and it will make its first appearance this summer, probably as part of official signs prohibiting smoking on Del Mar's public beaches.

The logo will be incorporated into future public improvement projects, including street banners, on tourist information kiosks and for the Saturday farmers markets in the City Hall parking lot, according to Jen Grove, executive director of the Del Mar Village Association.

The logo does not replace the city seal, which appears on official documents and is used for all official business.

A gift to the city from the association, the logo expresses “the look and feel of Del Mar” and captures the city's unique character, Grove said.

“We wanted to see what we could do to start the (downtown) revitalization,” and the pine-needle design won, she said.

The logo was created by resident David Arnold, a former advertising agency creative director, in conjunction with The McCulley Group, a Solana Beach advertising and graphics design firm.

The design, which depicts a Torrey pine branch and needles, has been likened to a “ballerina with outstretched arms,” Arnold said. Its color is green, but the shade is still a work in progress, he said.
