San Francisco Opera General Director David Gockley Unveils New Visual Identity for the Company
The San Francisco Opera today unveiled a new visual identity for the Company, heralding the beginning of a new era under the leadership of David Gockley, who became the Company’s sixth general director on January 1, 2006. Elements of San Francisco Opera’s new image include a new logo, a glamorous and sophisticated new look for the print materials, and a major redesign of the Company’s Web site.

Created by the internationally acclaimed design firm Pentagram, the new logo – a metallic gold star-like symbol on a deep red background – is inspired by the beautiful sunburst chandelier in the historic War Memorial Opera House. The restoration of the theater’s massive six-tier chandelier to its former glory was a crowning element of the major renovation, completed in 1997, of the 1932 Beaux Arts Opera House, which is a designated historic landmark and has been home to the Company for 75 years. Led by Pentagram Associate Partner Brian Jacobs, the creative team conceptualized the new symbol as a contemporary interpretation of the chandelier, but the mark is open to a broader interpretation, including that of the sound waves emanating from a human voice and a sense of explosive excitement. The new logo will be immediately adopted throughout the Company and will also be used, in slightly different styles, by Company affiliates including the San Francisco Opera Center, San Francisco Opera Guild, Merola Opera Program, and BRAVO! CLUB.

The new logo is a centerpiece of the new visual image incorporated into the 2006-07 Season subscription campaign materials, and contributed to the major redesign of the Company’s Web site. Mission Minded created the new design concept for the Company’s updated image and the new subscription campaign materials, which focuses on the glamour of grand opera and features large format photographs of the stars and productions.
