Algoma Council On Domestic Violence
Every day the Sault Ste. Marie Police Services lay 3-4 criminal assault charges due to domestic violence. With the help of more than 30 agencies, the Algoma Council on Domestic Violence wants to dramatically reduce that number.
On Monday morning they unveiled their new logo. Council chair, Peter Vaudry, says “The logo is an important step in educating the public. By having agencies across the Algoma District who deal with this issue on a daily basis working together, we believe it's possible to make a real difference. These community partners understand the need to address the serious effects domestic violence have on each and every citizen of our District. Whether this crime has happened to you or someone you know, instances of domestic violence occur frequently enough that they are a significant burden on society and community agencies.”
Sault Ste. Marie Police Chief, Bob Davies, agrees it's vital all community agencies collaborate on this issue. “If it wasn't for this Council, we would not see any changes with respect to how Sault Ste. Marie deals with domestic violence. The domestic violence situation in Sault Ste. Marie would remain the same. We would continue to have victims and we would continue to have domestic violence homicides.” said Police Chief Davies. Davies went on to say that because of the Algoma Council on Domestic Violence, he predicts in five years time we'll see a lot lower numbers with respect to domestic violence and less tragedies.
