A panda is born — the story of the panda logo
When leading conservationists launched WWF International in 1961, they needed a symbol. Chi Chi — the only giant panda in the West — had won the hearts of all at London Zoo. Conservationist, artist and founding member Sir Peter Scott refined initial sketches of the animal into the WWF panda logo.
Today the logo is recognised throughout the world. Increasingly, people understand that protecting a ‘flagship’ species such as the giant panda benefits far more than just that species. It protects the entire ecosystem in which the last few pandas exist — animals and plants, mountain forests, river systems and the millions of humans.
