Introducing the JMU Identity System
To quote university marketing expert Bob Sevier, “The basic strategy is this: one university, one look.”

Achieving that goal is what this guide to the JMU Identity System is all about. Why? There are several reasons. First, it is confusing to our students, alumni and anyone else who cares about James Madison University to have more than one look. Second, units on campus become separated by their dissimilar identities. And third, we squander possible economies of scale. Money is so precious on this campus, why would we want to slowly fritter it away on various identities heading off into every direction? (…)

James Madison Logo
The James Madison logo symbolizes the university's link to James Madison, Father of the U.S. Constitution and fourth president of the United States. JMU is the only university in the country named for President Madison.

The James Madison logo consists of three elements: Madison's image, the words “James Madison University” stacked and the registration mark.

James Madison University Theme
The university theme, “all together one,” captures a unique Madison spirit that allows people to be themselves while being part of something bigger. President Linwood H. Rose first used the theme in his September 1999 inaugural address. The university theme must be displayed with visual integrity according to the following standards.
