Soccer league goes with new logo, identity
That big thing with a soccer ball in the middle of this column — that's the Greensboro Youth Soccer Association's new logo, which will start showing up on uniforms this fall.
Don't worry, the names of the group's two select soccer teams, the Twisters and the Greensboro Soccer Club, will not change. And it's still the GYSA, though the “A” won't appear much longer on the uniforms.
The new logo will first show up on the uniforms worn by players in the association's recreational divisions and on training jerseys for select players.
The new look does two things.
One, it will make the “Greensboro” more visible on jerseys so that opposing teams know that the local teams are from here and not Greenville, Goldsboro or Green Bay.
The other, GYSA leaders said, is more symbolic.
GYSA, like many other youth soccer associations, is saddled with the perception, real or not, that youth soccer is the almost exclusive domain of wealthy suburban children. The logo's new emphasis might help the association attract players from parts of town where recruitment efforts have traditionally fallen short.
“We wanted to clearly communicate that we serve youth of all ages and that we have a strong history of being nationally recognized and competitive,” said Ed O'Keeffe, GYSA's board president. “More importantly, we want to be absolutely inclusive in providing the best soccer opportunities in Greensboro for all kids.”
