ASTRO: In with the new
In an effort to give it a more global identity, the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO of Fairfax, Va) has adopted a new logo. Chosen by the Board of Directors, the logo now features a ring as part of the “A,” suggesting radiation through not only the orbit of an electron but also the globe. Gone from the new design are the nuclear symbol and the crab, the traditional symbol for cancer, which played a prominent role in the original ASTRO logo for more than 40 years.
The development of a new logo builds on the efforts made by ASTRO in the past year, starting with an ongoing public-awareness campaign that produced nine patient brochures. The brochures outline radiation therapy for seven different disease sites, as well as an overview of radiation therapy and information on the radiation therapy treatment team. “Though our logo has changed, our overall goal remains the same: We are committed to the best care for our patients and to maintaining radiation oncology as a vibrant specialty,” said ASTRO chair Theodore Lawrence, MD, PhD.
