Newspaper design and visual identity

The customer
Early in 2005, an important group of journalists from Adevărul headed by editor-in-chief Cristian Tudor Popescu have decided to start on their own and set up a new daily with the famous poet and publisher Mircea Dinescu. Their newspaper was going to be called Gândul (The Thought).

The challenge
The public s expectations were immense, given the appreciation the editorial team had been enjoying for over a decade. Gândul was meant to be an incisive, quality newspaper that would set standards yet unreached by the Romanian press. Solution and style.

The newspaper design, visual identity and information architecture needed to clearly and consistently communicate the personality and values the talented people at Gândul were renown for.

The solution
Grapefruit created a simple, elegant identity, with a nameplate based on an icon familiar to all Romanians the Neolithic statue of the Hamangia Thinker.

Simplicity and elegance combine with functionalism throughout Gândul's page architecture and design. Its intermediary format (in between broadsheet and tabloid), the highly legible typefaces, and the visual hierarchy of pages all concur to produce a pleasant reading experience. The clean layout, the left-aligned text, the placement of titles and photography, and the sparse use of color and graphics also contribute to a modern newspaper format and a well-de ned, consistent visual identity.

To assure the quality of the design and an optimal blend of editorial strategy and visual direction, Grapefruit trained Gândul's DTP personnel and developed a design manual that included all the necessary resources and guidelines for the newspaper s typographic architecture style.
