Freshman wins Division of Student Life logo contest
by Andrew Newhall
The Division of Student Life and the Office of the Dean of Students announced the winner of their logo contest this week.
Freshman Business Admin-istration major Derek Kim was awarded $500 for his new design which will be used for various Division of Student Life functions.
The new Student Life Logo contest was offered to undergraduate as well as graduate Drexel students in November. Touting a cash reward, the Dean of Students Office motivated contestants to submit exciting new designs by January. The call was heard, and nearly 80 submissions were collected and reviewed by the Dean's Senior Leadership Team.
“No one understood what the symbolism of the old logo meant,” Dean of students David Ruth said. With the stated purpose of the students making their mark on the image of the Division of Student Life, Ruth was happy to see the great response.
Contestants were allowed unlimited entries and Kim's winning design was a combination of two of his five.
The reviewers wanted designs that were simple and clean. “We needed a design that wasn't too complicated and would easily be reproduced on a variety of materials, such as in print, signage, shirts and the like,” Ruth said.
The ease of application to many mediums will translate into students seeing the new logo much more. Over the next few months all instances of the old logo will be replaced with Kim's.
