Excerpt
Springer, the new, ambitious global player in the world of STM publishing, will have a new look as of July 1, 2004. In just a few weeks, we will start to introduce the logo step by step to our international markets. The new corporate design combines the name Springer – the German word for the knight in chess – with a 21st century version of this chess piece. The name itself, Springer, will be used without the suffix ‘Verlag’*, indicating a departure from the ‘old’ Springer, while at the same time adopting a more international appearance. Matching the trustworthy blue to a bright, warm orange, our new look reflects the identity of the new Springer brand:

distinguished and modern
dependable and open
traditional and digital
strong and agile

The introduction of this visual identity is an important milestone in the process of merging our companies. It signals the moment that KAP and Springer-Verlag start sharing the same name and the same look. A joint identity enables us to really join forces and move the Springer knight forward.
Only the publishing houses Key Curriculum, Princeton Architectural Press and Birkhäuser, although active in STM publishing as well, will continue to use their individual brands in line with their specific market position.

The full implementation of the new design will begin on July 1, 2004, an important date in the merger: the employees of Springer New York and KAP New York will physically move to one location. From this point on, we will present ourselves under this new brand to our customers, authors, editors and the rest of the world.

The History:
The Springer logo as a symbol of the publisher's long tradition and identity, but gave it a more precise look. Strength of expression and precision of detail were just as important as the integration of the original logo of 1842. The revamped logo is a timeless, masterful emblem. (MetaDesign)
